Project Management Challenges

There are basically three different kinds of solution to project portfolio management or program management (programme management). Firstly, there are numerous well established organisations that provide project management systems. These systems stem from the traditional project management market i.e. heavy engineering and construction. As high technology organisations started to adopt project management methods, the traditional tools were 'bent' to meet the needs of scheduling with limited resources. With the emergence of program management and the need for managing multiple projects across multiple locations with finite resources, these systems are now so 'bent out of shape' it's like fitting a square peg into a round hole. No longer does the project manager own all aspects of one project.

In our world, responsibility for delivery is divided between program managers, project managers, team leaders, functional managers etc. This has brought about a new genre of web based tools, however these tools are slow, have an unfamiliar interface and more often than not, rely on external scheduling systems - those described above. This leads to the same problem of project managers planning with resources they do not own, which in turn leads to unrealistic plans, inaccurate management reports and late projects!
